So about this time last year I sent out quite generous samples of some teas to a few friends, just to help make the "puerh box" a little lighter. Lately feeling as though I might actually be missing out on something that has kept so many people enthralled, causing people to not only invest in thousands of dollars worth of tea, but go even further and spend thousands of dollars to try and create the correct storage conditions, has me baffeled.
A small note on puerh, as while certain people like the amazingly caustic new sheng cakes, puerh in my mind is meant to be consumed at an older age. But even then having tried some dozen or so aged Puerh tea's I am not completely sold on all of the fuss.
But rest assured I am trying, in the past 3 weeks I have dipped into the puerh chest 5-6 times, which is 4 more times than I did the previous 2 months. Todays challenger is one of my favorite puerhs back when I was drinking, although it has been known for causing incredible palate fatigue after the first 5-6 infusions or so. Its Changtai 2005 Yiwu. It definitely seems to have mellowed since I have gotten it, which I believe was summer 2010.

Can definitely appreciate the conundrum you're in. I like aged pu-erh, I hate the wait to get there, though.
Unfortunately, finances and lack of "connections" prevents me from getting good aged pu. And green pu upsets even my iron stomach.
Ah well - guess it's just collect and wait. =)
I prefer a wet storage puer with a subtle dry leaf aroma. The examples I have are eight years old or older. The mouth feel and intensity of these teas are comfortable.I save puer for when I am not feeling well. With no health insurance the tea is an essential part of my cowboy medicine.
I've never had a sheng Pu-erh that I consider "amazingly caustic". It could be that I like edgy teas, or that I just haven't tried much Pu-erh and have gotten lucky.
But I also have a strong stomach and a tendency to like bitter tastes.
That said, I have a small cake in my apartment right now, and a few pieces of cakes I received as gifts, all of which are under 10 years old and all of which are relatively mellow. I actually like the edgiest of them the best.
I haven't really decided to "get into" Pu-erh yet though...in particular, I haven't bought anything with the intention of aging it yet.
